Before he became the revered captain of the Survey Corps, Levi struggled to survive in the Underground, the capital's garbage dump. He relied on his criminal enterprise and support from fellow lawbreakers Isabel Magnolia and Farlan Church to make ends meet. Hopeless about their future, Levi agrees to a deal with anti-expedition leader Nicholas Lobov: assassinate Erwin Smith, a Squad Leader of the Survey Corps, in exchange for citizenship aboveground. When Levi coincidentally meets Erwin, the latter acknowledges his talent and gives him an ultimatum: join the expedition or face punishment.
