For years, humanity has been plagued by the chaotic phenomenon of Spontaneous Human Combustion. This strange occurrence randomly transforms ordinary people into violent, flaming creatures known as Infernals. While Infernals were the first-generation accounts of Human Combustion, the second and third generations became known as pyrokinetics, with the ability to manipulate and control their flames while still being human. To combat the Infernal threat and uncover the cause, the Tokyo Armed Forces, Fire Defense Agency, and Holy Church of Sol collaborated to create the Special Fire Force. Shinra Kusakabe, a young and passionate third-generation pyrokinetic, nicknamed Devil's Footprints for his explosive foot-igniting ability, joins the lively Special Fire Force Company 8. As a member of the squad, Shinra is determined to uphold their duty to extinguish Infernals and lay their souls to rest, hoping to become a hero and save lives from the fiery terror. However, this is not the heroic game that Shinra initially envisioned. The Fire Force is a disjointed mess of warring factions, with abnormal Infernal sightings increasing throughout Tokyo, and a shadowy group claiming to possess answers to the strange fire that killed Shinra's family 12 years ago. Through the many difficulties and obstacles within and outside of the Fire Force, Shinra is determined to uncover the truth behind the burning mysteries that have kept him in the dark.
