It has been a decade since the conclusion of the Bakumatsu, a period of warfare where the common people fought against the oppressive Tokugawa shogunate. Their aim was to impart peace and freedom in the country. Despite this, the new Meiji era has not seen the realization of this goal, with individuals still being slain on the streets even though the use of swords has been prohibited. The children of war veterans are left to fend for themselves, and the government appears solely driven by greed. In this age of unrest, an itinerant samurai named Kenshin Himura is driven to ensure that the values he fought for still hold meaning. Once recognized as the legendary Hitokiri Battousai, he was notorious for being the deadliest murderer among the revolutionaries. However, now consumed by remorse, Kenshin has vowed to never kill again and remains unsatisfied until bloodshed is no longer necessary. As the 11th Meiji year commences, Kenshin encounters Kaoru Kamiya, the proprietor and principal trainer of a small dojo that is on the brink of closure. A man professing to be the famous Battousai is on a killing spree in support of her dojo, which the police are powerless to stop. Kenshin's wandering ways come to a halt as he teams up with Kaoru to clear their names. Nonetheless, how long can he evade the ramifications of his past?
