Taking place in 19th century China, during the weakened Qing Dynasty, the story chronicles a fictional time called "The Era of the Cooking Wars". Renowned chefs with unique cooking styles fiercely competed to become the ultimate culinary champion in China. In a country where disrespecting a high-ranking chef's abilities could result in imprisonment, impersonating a great chef was considered rebellion. Culinary leaders fought not only for admiration but also for authority, risking everything. China is divided into four primary regions: Beijing, Szechuan, Shanghai, and Guangdong. The narrative starts in Mao's birthplace of Szechuan following the death of his mother, Pai - a celebrated chef known as the 'Fairy of Cuisine'. Mao aspires to become a Super Chef and take over his mother's restaurant. He embarks on a journey to learn diverse cooking techniques from all over China, aiming to gain the same legendary status as his mother. Along this path, he makes lifelong friends and rivals who repeatedly challenge his cooking skills.
