Description:

Sterling North leads a simple and peaceful life in Brailsford Junction, Wisconsin, where he spends most of his spare time tending to animals. His immediate family is reduced to just his father and beloved dog Hauser, as his mother is receiving treatment in the hospital and his brother is deployed to fight in the Western Front. One day, Sterling decides to take a break from his usual chores and goes on a fishing trip with his friend Oscar and faithful companion Hauser. During their journey to the river, Hauser sniffs out an intriguing scent near the base of a tree. Upon investigation, the two boys stumble upon a baby raccoon who has become an orphan after its mother was killed by a hunter for its fur coat. Moved by the helpless creature's plight, Sterling decides to become its guardian and names it Rascal. Despite the difficult circumstances surrounding his family life, with his mother's sickness and his brother's absence in the war, Sterling finds solace in his newfound friendship with the "ring-tailed wonder" and streetwise Rascal. Their bond strengthens Sterling's connection to the world and makes him appreciate the small joys of life.
