Description:
Benio "Haikara-san" Hanamura is the protagonist of the story, who was left motherless at a young age and brought up by her father, a high-ranking Japanese army official. Her upbringing has led her to become a tomboy, defying conventional Japanese femininity traits. Instead, she prefers to engage in kendo, enjoys the occasional sip of sake, wears Western clothing that is unconventional over the traditional kimono, and favors literature over house chores. She shuns the concept of an arranged marriage and advocates for a woman's liberty to pursue a career and tie the knot for love.
